Mary Cartmel

Mary has worked exclusively in soapstone since 1993. Most of her stones come fromQuebec, Brazil,China and more recently India. Birds are a recurring subject in her work. The contrasting differences between the bulk and hardness of the stone versus the delicate lightness and movement of the subject are an intrigue and challenge for her.

Mary studied at S.A.I.T. (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), Alberta College of Art, Calgary, Alberta and at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. She has exhibited throughout Quebec, as well as, British Colombia, Vermont, USA, London, England, and Ireland. Mary received the People’s Choice Award for her work in the Salon du Printemps Exhibition, Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Art, Sherbrooke, Quebec. She has been a major influence and has worked extensively to promote the Fine Arts in her region.

Mary’s sculptures are in private collections around the world as well as Canadian Corporate collections. Originally a Montrealer, Mary now resides in the Eastern Townships of Quebec with her two sons.
